June 2 is an important day for all people in my country because it’s Italian Republic Day.

It commemorates the day when Italians in 1946 (including women for the first time) voted in a referendum to choose between the monarchy and the republic.

With the referendum, after 85 years (including 20 of the fascist dictatorship, ended during the Second World War), the Italian kingdom of Savoy’s house ended, and my country became a constitutional republic.

Every year the ceremonies are started by our President, and a wreath is laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The tomb, which also has an eternal flame, was added to one of Italy’s largest national monuments, Altare Della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland) in Rome. Celebrations continue with a military parade in the presence of the highest state offices.

However, the moment that all Italians wait for is that of the spectacular performance of the Frecce Tricolori or tricolor arrows (is the aerobatic demonstration team of the Italian Air Force). With ten aircraft, nine in close formation, and a soloist, they are the world’s largest acrobatics patrol in the world. During the flight, every single aircraft releases a trail of colored smoke, drawing the Italian flag colors in the sky: green, white, and red.

This year celebrations:

Of course, in 2020, the health emergency caused by the COVID-19 epidemic heavily conditioned traditional protocols, changing, at least for this year, the face of the ceremonies: no parades and all the rest of the events reduced to a minimum.

But even in this unlucky situation, our beloved “Frecce Tricolori” makes the difference. They put on an impressive display on Monday (May 25), bathing the northern cities of Milan and Turin with the Italian flag’s colors. The team will be floating their green, white, and red colors over 21 cities in five days culminating in Rome today, June 2nd, for the Italian Republic Day.

Needless to say that seeing the “Frecce Tricolore” darting in the sky always gives a powerful emotion.
